Creo's new iQsmart line of professional flatbed color scanners reportedly produces razor-sharp scans from any size original. The compact iQsmart2 and iQsmart3 use Creo's exclusive XY Stitch technology that scans images in strips, instead of zooming, which causes resolution to drop as image size is increased. The scanners also feature an inverted CCD to minimize dust and improve image quality. Any type of original can be scanned, including positive or negative transparencies, reflective materials, mounted slides, line art, printed material and halftone-screened films.
The iQsmart3 offers maximum optical resolution of 5500 × 10,000 dpi and maximum enlargement of 3,300 percent. The scanner can generate up to 40 scans per hour. IQsmart3's parallel workflow allows operators full access to the scanning software to preview and set up the next image while the scanner is capturing and processing a previous scan. The iQsmart2 model offers a maximum optical resolution of 4300 × 8200 dpi and maximum enlargement of 2,700 percent. In batch mode, it can produce 30 scans per hour.
The iQsmart scanners feature the oXYgen scanning application, which uses professional image-editing and soft-proofing tools with full ICC color management. With the Scan Once, Output Many workflow on the iQsmart3, images are scanned once and saved as a 16-bit digital transparency file that can be repurposed for as many different uses as required.
The new oXYgen DOT software, which allows for copydot scanning and digital descreening on the same scanner, is optional for iQsmart3.
The iQsmart2 will replace Creo's Jazz scanners. The
iQsmart3 will replace the Pro II. Both new scanners will
run under Macintosh OS 9.2 and X. In the future, the
iQsmart2 will also connect to Windows
workstations.

The Mini-Skid from PJ Manufacturing is constructed of ABS
plastic, which reportedly withstands long, hard use. The Mini-Skid
allows users to insert a hand-truck tongue underneath the skid
without having to manually tip the stack of boxes. Stacks of boxes
can be stored next to walls and each other, saving storage space.
The Mini-Skid is also ergonomically friendly, reducing the level of
physical exertion needed to move stacks of boxes.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) launches its HP Productivity category of printing materials, designed to shorten the large-format printing cycle. The Photo Gloss, Photo Semi Gloss and Heavy Weight Coated Paper-Long Roll printing materials are the first in the Productivity series, part of HP's Premium line of printing materials.
Specifically addressing the drying and lamination time in the post-production cycle, HP Productivity Photo Gloss and Photo Semi Gloss dry immediately and go from printer to laminator without delay. While 95 percent of digital printing media are swellable and require four to 24 hours for the ink to evaporate, the HP Productivity Photo materials use a special inkjet coating technology that enables quick ink evaporation. This reportedly allows print service providers to be more productive and cost-efficient, as they no longer need to wait for prints to dry, worry about smudging, or devote shop space and money to drying racks.
Compatible with dye and pigment inks, these products can be used
with either HP Designjet or non-HP large-format printers. The HP
Productivity Photo Gloss and Photo Semi Gloss printing materials
are available in 100-ft. rolls of 36-, 42-, 54- and 60-inch widths.
The Heavy Weight Coated Paper Printing Material is available in
225-ft. lengths of 42- and 60-inch widths.

Solvent Kleene's D-Zolve 333 is said to completely dissolve
dried ink deposits on anilox rolls, restoring the anilox cell
structure to its original volume. It removes both aqueous and
conventional solvent-based inks, and can be used when rolls are
either on or off a press. It reportedly eliminates the need for
periodic cleaning with aggressive processes such as ultrasonic
cleaning, soda blasting and ice blasting. It is compatible with
ceramic materials and all ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well
as HDPE, polypropylene and nylon. It can be applied using a brush
or rag, or used in a dip tank. Solvent Kleene doesn't contain any
halogens or CFCs; it is non-flammable, non-ozone depleting and
presents minimal air pollution.
