If you’ve been to Washington, DC, you’ve probably visited at least one museum. Perhaps none are as popular as the Smithsonian Institution’s 19 specialized institutions, which include everything from the National Air and Space Museum to the National Postal Museum. What if the printing industry could have something like that?
AN AMAZING LIBRARY
With your help, it can. The seeds have been planted at Cal Poly’s campus in San Luis Obispo. The school is already home to the Shakespeare Press Museum, one of only two working printing museums west of the Rocky Mountains. And, thanks to the Printing Industries of America, Cal Poly will eventually house the Edward H. Wadewitz Memorial Library. “This will be similar to other great focused libraries such as those at the Library of Congress, Harvard University and Yale,” says Harvey R. Levenson, Professor Emeritus, Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly.
This is reportedly the largest intact collection of graphic communications technical information and literature in North America. The library has more than 6,000 books, reports and texts on all aspects of printing and graphic communications processes. It also contains all the research and technical reports, books and other materials published by the GATF.
KEEP OUR HISTORY ALIVE
“This collection will become an applied tool to keep the history of printing alive and to demonstrate how history is a window on the future and is valuable in research and strategic planning,” says Levenson. “If you believe in the value of print, join us in this venture and receive perpetual recognition in the name of your choice.”
Moving the collection and renovating space for its installation will cost approximately $100,000; oversight and maintenance is expected to cost $20,000 annually. Cal Poly has already received an initial lead contribution of $25,000 and is seeking matching funds.
