Magazine launches outnumber closures in first half of 2011

In the first half of 2011, 138 magazines launched and 74 magazines closed, according to the http://mediafinder.com database of U.S. and Canadian publications.

The top categories for new launches were food and regional interest with new titles such as “Gilt Taste” and “Plum Hamptons.” For ceased magazines, the top category was regional interest, with the closure of the “944 Media” magazines, recently acquired by Sandow Media Corp.

Compared to the same period in 2010, with only 90 new magazines launches, the first half of 2011 shows strength in the magazine market with 138 launches.

“We attribute the increase in magazine launches over last year to the flexibility of magazine publishers and innovative new publishing entrepreneurs,” says Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com.

In the business-to-business segment, 34 new titles launched, such as “Progressive Cattleman,” and 13 titles ceased publication including “Industrial Wastewater” and “Texas Construction.”
